The dex webinar series has been established in 2021 to foster the exchange between practitioners and scientists in both directions. The dex members and external experts present the latest findings from practice orientated research in the field of sanitary engineering as well as operational experiences from full scale. As usual, the dex aims to address an international audience in all stages of the personal career, from graduates to senior staff.

After each presentation there will be sufficient time for discussion.

Microplastic in Urban Water Management

Since several years plastic emission into our rivers, lakes and oceans came into focus. The world wide plastic production is about 360 million tons per year. The plastic impact into the oceans is estimated up to 2.4 mio t/year. The German ministry of education and research has set up a program called 'Plastic in the environment' to developed measurement methods and measures to reduce the plastic impact. Within the talk of Prof. Matthias Barjenbruch the microplastic impact and reduction in the urban water cycle will be discussed.

First full scale municipal wastewater treatment plant in Germany using granular activated sludge with the NEREDA technology

In November 2019, the Ruhrverband began the reconstruction of the Altena wasetwater treatment plant. Within the scope of a variant investigation for the upgrading of the plant, the use of the innovative Nereda® process turned out to be the best solution for an economic, resource-efficient and operationally reliable wastewater treatment in the long term.
With the large-scale implementation of the Nereda® process, the Ruhrverband is breaking new ground, because although the process, which was developed and patented in the Netherlands, is already being used at more than 20 municipal wastewater treatment plants worldwide, it is being put into practice in Altena for the first time in Germany. The new plant will replace the existing activated sludge plant. After the commissioning of the converted sewage treatment plant, an initial two-year large-scale demonstration operation is expected to take place from the beginning of 2022, which will be accompanied by extensive monitoring. During this period, the Ruhrverband must prove to the supervisory authorities that the new wastewater treatment plant can meet the expectations for the effluent quality achieved.
The project is being funded with EUR 1,409,699 from the Environmental Innovation Programme of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

Wastewater-based epidemiology for SARS-CoV-2

Wastewater-based epidemiology can provide valuable information on viruses by molecular analysis and the geographical distribution of cases. This approach can serve as a supporting tool for pandemic management in the COVID-19 crisis. In the presentation, the principles behind the approach as well as application cases and results from trend analysis and sequencing of variants of concern will be presented and discussed.
