DEX Summer School

We equip young professionals with up-to-date methods for water quality management under EU law.

The Association of German Experts (dex) organizes the annual dex Summer School. dex members—professors holding permanent positions at German-speaking universities—train young professionals in the field of wastewater management.

The dex Summer School is typically hosted by a supporting member of dex, for example HTI Gienger (Markt Schwaben, Germany, 2016), VTA (Rottenbach, Austria, 2014), and Andritz (Graz, Austria, 2009). The aim of the dex Summer School is to pass on the expertise of dex professors in the field of urban water management to the next generation of professionals and to raise awareness of current topics in this sector.

In addition to this in-depth knowledge transfer, the dex Summer School offers a welcoming atmosphere that fosters international networking among participants as well as with dex professors. It is primarily aimed at PhD candidates, master’s students, and employees of companies in the wastewater sector from Central and Eastern European countries.

The dex Summer School was launched in 2009 and has since been successfully continued with more than 200 young professionals from the water sector representing over 15 different countries. In 2026, the dex Summer School will take place in Hof (Germany) at the premises of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment.

The main objective of the dex Summer School 2026 is to provide expertise related to the newly ratified EU Urban Wastewater Directive (UWWD) of November 5, 2024. The program equips participants with in-depth knowledge and practical skills required to comply with this directive, thereby promoting effective water quality management across Europe.

All lecturers are internationally recognized academics with many years of scientific and practical experience in their respective fields and beyond—offering a unique opportunity.

Course content includes: in-depth scientific background, state-of-the-art technologies, experiences and practical aspects for the planning and operation of sewer systems, wastewater treatment plants, sludge treatment, and energy management.
